Barium sulfate, also known as barite, can be detected by diluted hydrochloric acid or dilute nitric acid for containing CaCO3 and other impurities. Natural barium sulfate is used in paint production and fine paper production, and used as white pigment [lithopone (ZnS.BaSO4) ZnSO4+BaS=ZnS.BaSO4]. It can also be used as raw material and filler for paint, ink, plastic and rubber. Besides, we use barium sulfate to produce BaCl2 and other barium compounds in chemical engineering field. In medicine field, it is mainly used as oral medicine for intestines and stomach to do barium meal examination.
Precipitated barium sulfate is one of the few stable sulfate salts, which is mainly used as weighting agent for oil and gas drilling mud. It is important raw mineral material for extracting barium and producing various kinds of barium compounds. The most important barium compounds in industry are barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium sulfate, barium nitrate, barium hydroxide, barium oxide, barium peroxide, barium chromate and barium manganate, barium chlorate, lithopone, barium polysulfide, etc.
Barium compounds has a wide range of application: used as raw material and filler for rubber, plastic, pigment, coating, papermaking, textile, paint, ink and welding rod; used as a raw material for barium-based lubricating grease, oil refining, beet sugar manufacture and rayon; used as pesticides, fungicides, rodenticides, explosives, green fireworks, signal flare, flame tracer, indicator of medical X ray photograph, etc; also used in glass, ceramics, leather, electronics, building materials, metallurgy and other departments.
With high filling-ability, barium sulfate can be used in all coating, for example, undercoat, mastic coating and all other types. The low specific surface area, particle size distribution and thin fluidity endow barium sulfate with low wearability in process. Barium sulfate is recommended for superficial layer of automatic undercoat and even finishing coat which kept good in high filling. Barium sulfate is better than most other fillers, especially in chemical resistance coating. It is insoluble in water, acid, alkali and organic medium for its inertia. Excellent gloss and fineness of particles protect finishing coat in long-term exposure.
Barium sulfate is recommended for paint, which can increase surface hardness and color stability. If we apply barium sulfate (about 25%) into PP, the PP surface will be similar to ABS. In this way, PP original characteristics will not be influenced and high gloss and high hardness are provided at the same time. The filling proportion of external barium sulfate can reach 80% of its gravity. Noise can be effectively insulated by its application in drainage pipe, loudspeaker box and acoustics. Barium sulfate is used in curtain to add weight and in the shell of electric appliance to provide high gloss, good color, scratch resistance, good dimensional stability and so on.
